Phytoplankton and zooplankton are natural sources of feed for the growth of aquatic animals like fish and shrimp. The floating microscopic plants or the phytoplankton are the micro algae which form the basic food for all the aquatic animals. Shrimp and fish depend on these basic foods to fulfill their nutrient requirements. The success of aquaculture operation depends on the soil and water management, viz., maintaining optimum bloom, Oxygen and use of quality feed and feed additives. It is a well recognized fact that feed contributes to almost 65-70% of total cost or production. If proper plankton bloom is maintained, shrimps and fish feed on it and thereby will reduce the consumption of artificial feed which will inturn reduce the cost of production. Moreover healthy  plankton bloom is essential for various other reasons like:

• Improving dissolved oxygen
• Reducing fluctuations in temperature
• Shading the ponds and preventing the growth of harmful benthic algae.
• Providing darker environment which is favorable and comfortable to shrimps.
